As I was reading this article today, I realized just how much can be outsourced overseas—software development, manufacturing and we're all a little too familiar with foreign call centers. With all the outsourcing and cheap labor overseas, it's tempting to hire a very cheap editor from India, the Philippines or Bangladesh.
While an editor overseas may only cost you a few dollars, it's an unwise investment. I've had many clients whose manuscripts had already been edited by a non-native English speaker and still had many errors, misspellings and grammatical mistakes. They have all regretted their choice to choose cost over quality.
Editors and writers who are native English speakers are worth the investment. While it's possible to become well versed in another language, it is impossible to be a native speaker in more than one. The small differences in word usage, sentence structure and cultural idioms are very difficult to learn.
